Workpump's History
Workpump was started with a simple question: why do some startups prosper while others struggle or fail?
John Browne: "While at Microsoft for 11 years I helped many products move from underdogs to market leaders: Windows, Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, Visual C++. It occurred to me that all those products had gone through a process guaranteed to make success highly likely. This was one of Microsoft's strengths: a fanatical focus on best practices and knowledge transfer.
"In my consulting work I rarely see emerging companies using these proven techniques. How to develop the right product for the market, how to define the value proposition and communicate it to customers, how to create internal operations and resources to serve customers better--these things aren't rocket science, and any company can learn them.
"I started Workpump with the goal of helping little companies turn into bigger ones. In a big company you've got lots of resources and people to iron out best practices, test marketing approaches, figure out value propositions, and so on. In young companies you've typically got a few people with their heads down, trying to get everything done. They rarely have the time, energy, or experience to stand back and figure out how to do things better."
