Are you Invested?

For some reason otherwise sane people just go nutty when it comes to investing in their businesses. They either invest too much, not enough, or in the wrong places.

People who in their last job wouldn't begin to consider a project without a $10,000 budget will—as an entrepreneur—try to do the same project with spare change found under the sofa cushions.

I've seen way too many entrepreneurs create a business plan they're convinced is a billion dollar company, but not want to invest any of their own money in it. VC money? Sure! let's go get some. But not any of their own, thank you. Why not? Too risky.

Helloooo?

The old story is you can't expect the fire to give you heat until you put wood on it. Same thing with business: you have to commit resources. If you can't afford to play, you'd best stay home. Expecting to get all your money from someone else is not only unreasonable, it's a recipe for failure. People who are invested—both financially and emotionally—are much more likely to connect and execute.
